All About Coronado Municipal Beach

Coronado Island has no shortage of gorgeous beachfronts that are widely sought after, even by southern California standards. However, rising above the rest of them is the stunning Coronado Municipal Beach. Spending a day here is your own personal slice of California heaven! If you are looking for the best Coronado beaches, look no further than Coronado Municipal Beach.

Best Beach in America

Every city dreams of being able to boast a “Best of…” award, and the Coronado Municipal Beach boasts perhaps the most prestigious of all! In 2012, Coronado Municipal Beach was ranked as the #1 beach in America by the “Dr. Beach” survey. This annual survey, led by Florida International University Professor, Stephen P. Leatherman, ranks beaches based on a number of factors including environmental qualities on both land and sea, facilities, and crowds. Coronado Municipal Beach beat out Florida and Hawaii coasts due to its inviting waves and golden sand. There is truly no better beach to spend a day on than Coronado Municipal Beach!

Facilities and Activities

The coastline that encompasses Coronado Municipal Beach actually consists of four different beach areas that all offer slightly different facilities. Tidelands Park and Glorietta Bay Park have picnic areas, grass fields, and play areas for the kids. For dog lovers, the northern section of the beach allows dogs to roam freely in the sea and sand. Volleyball courts are scattered throughout and are available on a first come, first serve basis. Luckily, all of these beaches feature the signature sparkling sand of Coronado. Although the reflective properties of the sand actually come from the mineral mica, it is not uncommon for visitors to ask if it is gold! The golden sand and stunning sunsets make for amazing photo opportunities during your day on the beach. The waves are inviting as well, and the calm surfs are great for children, body boarders, and first time beachgoers.

Hotel del Coronado

If you would like a beach day with a little side of history, make sure to take time to visit Hotel del Coronado. Located along the Coronado Municipal Beach, this National Historic Landmark has been the crown of Coronado Island since it was built in 1888. Wander the same halls as presidents and celebrities and learn a bit of Coronado Island history.
