Who was J.D. Spreckels?
Spreckels Park gets its unusual name from perhaps the most important person in San Diego history: J.D. Spreckels. Spreckels, himself the son of a successful businessman, created a transportation and real estate empire that invigorated the San Diego and Coronado area and made it the bustling city it is today. Most notably, he developed the famous Hotel del Coronado, and at one point he owned the entire island! Spreckels Park is a fitting tribute for the man that did so much for Coronado Island.
Concerts in the Park
From Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, Spreckels Park transforms on Sunday nights for the concerts in the park series. Taking advantage of Coronado Island’s pleasant weather all year round, this concert series is a fun way to spend an evening in a beautiful park and listen to live music. The music feature ranges from jazz and blues to fun pop music. There is a concert for everyone during the concerts in the park, so be sure to check who is playing!
Coronado Flower Show
There are so many exciting events that take place at Spreckels Park, but perhaps the longest running is the Coronado Flower Show. If you find yourself on Coronado Island during the springtime, you will definitely can’t miss this! The Coronado Flower Show is the largest tented flower show in the United States. For 92 years and counting, the flower show has been a beautiful showcase of talent and a fun small town activity in this tightknit local community.
