If you are looking to enjoy some amazing food, great energy, and you want to learn a little something about the origins of the city, the Old Town San Diego Historic State Park is the place to be.

The History

This is an important place because it recalls the early days of the city. San Diego was the very first European settlement on the west coast of what is now the United States. The Spanish colonized it in 1769, and quickly left their mark on the area with amazing architecture, food, and Spanish celebrations. What is now the Old Town San Diego State Historical Park made up the heart of the city, until heavy development began in what is now Downtown San Diego in the 1860s. To this day, the area remains as one of the most charming and cultural in the city.

The Attractions

Old Town San Diego offers one of the best opportunities to immerse yourself in that history. The focal point of the ‘town’ is the complex of five original structures that date back to the 1820s through the 1850s. These adobe buildings serve as beautiful reminders of the origins of the culture of the city and life long ago. Beyond those, there are countless structures that have either been renovated or modeled after the architecture of this time that serve as museums.

While there are countless museums, some of the most notable ones are the Black Hawk Smithy and Stable, where you can see authentic blacksmith exhibitions, the Mason Street School—the first public school in San Diego—and the first San Diego courthouse. Beyond this, there are plenty of places to enjoy amazing food, dancing, and live music. What makes the San Diego Old Town so amazing is there are buildings and festivities celebrating each and every era of the city’s history.

Whether you are a huge fan of history or of amazing Mexican food, you are sure to enjoy the time you spend in the Old Town San Diego State Park. Make sure it is a big part of your plans for your next trip to San Diego.
