About the Memorial

Mount Soledad was designated as a veterans’ memorial in 1954. At this time, it had already been a very popular destination, as it offered spectacular views of the city. It is unique in that it honors veterans from every single conflict the United States has been involved in, from the Revolutionary War to the current conflicts in the Middle East. The most noticeable and prominent feature on Mount Soledad is the 27-foot white cross located at the highest point of the hill. This can be seen from all over La Jolla and most of San Diego. Around the cross are 11 curved walls of black granite, which display the names and faces of veterans from all conflicts and all branches of the military. This is all found in an incredible place that offers some of the most beautiful views of the city and the ocean. Mount Soledad has also become a local favorite place for bicyclists. This is due to the many roads that lead up the hill offering a steady incline and light traffic.
