Museum of Photographic Arts

The art of photography has always fascinated us. We can barely manage to take a picture that isn’t too blurred, too dark, or doesn’t have our thumb in the way of the object we are trying to shoot, and yet there are people who can make a garbage dump look like the most beautiful landmark in the world! It isn’t fair, of course, but we genuinely admire those who have the talents to make the pretty look beautiful and make the awkward appear graceful just by pushing a little button. The Museum of Photographic Arts is a celebration of all those talented artists. It is located inside San Diego’s historic Balboa Park.

1649 El Prado, Balboa Park

Featuring photographs from some of the world’s most celebrated photographers and photojournalists, this museum is a microcosm of the world’s experiences for over two centuries. Witness abject poverty on the faces of desperate farmers during the Great Depression, examine the great inequities of racism and prejudice through the decades, and explore the beauty of an ocean sunset, a city of skyscrapers, or the simple seductiveness of a woman posing nude in a bed of white. Experience slice of life pictures of glamorous women texting at train stations, photos of a mother tiger nursing her babies, or forget about merely looking at what others have provided and submit your own entries. Rules and information can be found here: http://www.mopa.org/content/artist-submissions.

Movies are Celebrated as Well

History repeats itself in the opportunity to watch the first Beatles documentary, Hard Day’s Night, on the big screen. Remember where you were when you saw the Beatles perform for the very first time. Learn about the Jews who found solace, respite, and happiness when they landed on the shores of southern Italy in the subtitled documentary, Shores of Light: Salento 1945-1947. Moving pictures can tell stories in ways that a simple photograph can’t.

And the Best Part?

Closed on Mondays and on major holidays, MOPA believes that it shouldn’t break your budget to admire art, so they offer a unique Pay What You Wish admission fee. Vacationers know the strain admission costs can put on a budget already pushed to its maximum, and if you can’t afford another museum fee, donate what you can and the admission is free. You can’t put a price on good art, and MOPA is proof that it isn’t always necessary to do so.
