San Diego Presidio Park

Our history in San Diego is a long one, spanning many centuries, and while most American cities have only been in existence for a few hundred years, the year was 1542 when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first stepped on San Diego shores. He died a few months later and it wasn’t until 1769 when the first European settlements were established in San Diego Presidio Park (although it was under Spanish rule at the time) and the city we all know and love began to exist. Today, you can walk in the footsteps of those brave settlers and marvel in their strength, dedication, and the pure stubbornness that made them fight for land in a dangerous and deadly world.

Presidio Park Looks Far Different Today

The early structures that the Presidio was once comprised of have long disappeared from years of exposure to the elements and new construction. It is possible, however, to catch a glimpse of the original parts of the Presidio if you look carefully. See that cross standing on the grounds of the Juniperro Serra Museum? It has been constructed of bricks, tiles, and other assorted pieces of leftover refuse from the original buildings. Grass has grown over the ruins of the adobe and wood buildings that were once a mainstay of San Diego construction, but look closer and you will see the outlines of rooms and halls that haven’t existed in hundreds of years.

The Juniperro Serra Museum

Constructed in 1929 when San Diego was first gifted the land that was once the Presidio and everything that had fallen to ruin within its boundaries, today, the history of the Presidio comes to life when you explore the halls of the historic Juniperro Serra Museum. The feats accomplished by the early settlers are celebrated here; we owe them so much!

Where is Presidio Park Located?

The physical address of the site is 2811 Jackson Street in San Diego, but esoteric pieces of the land can be forever found in our hearts! The many trails located throughout the park offer the opportunity to get some exercise, take in the incredible views, and to gain a new appreciation for what life must have been before air conditioning, glass windows, and indoor plumbing.
