San Diego Natural History Museum

Most major cities have their own versions of a natural history museum, large sprawling structures with examples of every living thing that has ever existed, exhilarating to explore and exhausting by the end of your visit! We love to visit each and every one we come across during our own travels, but we have a secret to share with you that we have never shared with anyone else: All other natural history museums pale in comparison to the one in our favorite city on Earth. They try to compete, we’ll give them that, but all the effort in the world can’t change a boring and uninteresting museum into one that is as fascinating as ours. But don’t just take our word on it; discover for yourself while you’re visiting San Diego! Chances are your Coronado Beach Rentals vacation home away from home is within a few miles of the museums entrance.

Located in Balboa Park at 1788 El Prado

Originally founded as the San Diego Society of Natural History, the mission of the early members was to preserve and protect our city’s natural resources. As they began to collect exhibits related to the natural history of our state, the need developed for larger quarters in which to hold their growing collection. Moving a few times before settling in its current building, the San Diego Natural History Museum is one of the oldest of its kind.

Today, the marble floored halls are filled to the brim with exhibits revolving around the natural resources of our state. Learn about the Cerutti Mastodon Discovery in their newest exhibition, which contains pictures, stories, and specimens discovered on a construction site. Your children will be thrilled at the opportunity to view “real live dinosaur skeletons” that range from the smallest specimens to life-size T-Rex’s; it’s kind of a big deal! Upcoming exhibitions will give visitors a behind the scenes glimpse of items that haven’t made it to the public displays. Beetle collections, small starfish, and brightly colored coral are just a few examples of what you can expect in this display.
