San Diego Museum of Man

Balboa Park is home to many interesting and historical museums, and one of the more interesting establishments, in our humble opinion, is the one devoted to the history of humans—The San Diego Museum of Man, to be more precise. Located at 1350 El Prado, this museum was founded in 1915 and contains just about everything important to the history of man, including a fascinating exhibit on cannibals! Think it’s impossible that your ancestors were cannibals? Think again, because chances are these misunderstood people can probably be found on a branch of your family tree—a fact that is as creepy as it is thought provoking. This is just one example of what we find so interesting about this unique museum.

As You Walk Through the Arched Wooden Doors

You’ll be amazed at the differences between the intricately carved wooden panels and wedding cake style fixtures on the outside of the building, and the sterile and modern interior where the exhibits are housed. Once inside, you will be eager to learn from all the exhibits The Museum of Man in San Diego has to offer. Discover if there really are differences between the races, learn about the beauty in the art of graffiti, walk with the Egyptians, and try to grasp the fact that beer has been a crutch for mankind for centuries in the Beer-ology Exhibit.

Have you ever wondered about the relationship between man and animal? Today, dogs are our family members, but not so many years ago, they were simply tools of protection. Which of our ancestors developed the first bond with a wild animal, and how did we reach the point where we are today? All these questions will be answered when you explore the recently opened Living With Animals Exhibit.

Something for the Kids

The beauty of children is the way their minds are like little sponges, soaking up information faster than it can be “poured” and always eager to learn more about everything. We sometimes get annoyed at our 3-year-olds constant barrage of questions, but isn’t it amazing how much they want to learn? Take a break from the questions when you allow your children to take part in the interactive Adventure Kids Exhibit in the Adventure Kids in Egypt Room. Watch their joy as they dress in ancient costumes, learn how to become young archaeologists as they “dig” for relics, sail on the Nile, and construct a pyramid by themselves! Ok, it’s a wood block pyramid but the ideas behind it are the same!
